BTCC Race 2: Ingram wins again to lead into the Brands Hatch finale

09 October 2022

Tom Ingram claimed his second Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship victory of the day on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this afternoon. This extended his advantage in the standings to 11 points ahead of the final race of the season later on.

Ingram secured the lead at the start in his Hyundai i30N, defending from pole position as Toyota Gazoo Racing's Rory Butcher ran side-by-side with him through Paddock Hill Bend. Ingram held his ground on the inside as the duo approached Druids from the first time and immediately set about controlling the pace at the front.

Butcher initially appeared to have the speed to match race one winner Ingram, but as the opening few laps progressed it became clear that he would be looking in his rear mirrors. Jake Hill briefly threatened the leaders after a rapid start, and after settling into the race in his ROKiT MB Motorsport BMW he really started grow into the race around lap four.

Whilst a tense game of cat and mouse ensued amongst the top-three, there was a fierce battle developing behind for fourth place between multiple champions Colin Turkington and Ash Sutton. NAPA Racing UK's Sutton did everything he could to hold off his Team BMW rival, with the pair making contact as Turkington attempted a move around the outside at Clearways on lap seven.

The following time around, Hill made a bold move on Butcher at Druids after the latter ran wide at Paddock Hill Bend, whilst Turkington made his pass on Sutton moments later, cutting up the inside at Surtees. This reset the order at the front with Hill now hot in pursuit of Sutton with Turkington chasing Butcher.

Hill put Ingram under intense pressure in the latter stages of the race and looked especially strong on the extended woodland section of the Kent circuit, particularly through Dingle Dell and Sheene Curve. Despite possessing an advantage at certain points of the lap, no clear chances presented themselves and Ingram was able to hold on and cross the line first to move further clear in the championship.

Just two laps from the end, Turkington managed to pass Butcher and he closed rapidly on the leading two as the race entered its final lap. He didn't have quite enough time to make serious inroads into the two leaders through and was forced to settle for the third and final spot on the rostrum just behind Hill.

Butcher finished a lonely fourth, one place ahead of Sutton who withstood race-long pressure from the Ciceley Motorsport BMWs of Adam Morgan and George Gamble. The latter was handed a five-second penalty for a false start, which allowed Josh Cook, Dan Cammish and Dan Lloyd to be promoted up the order to complete the top-ten.

This result ensures that Tom Ingram leads the standings by 11 points from Jake Hill ahead of the final race of the season, with Sutton 14 behind. Turkington was eliminated from this year's title fight despite his run to the podium. The top-ten will be reversed for the finale following the grid draw after the race.
