Ryan Smith and Stuart Oliver shared the top step of the podium for a second day in succession during three British Truck Racing Championship contests on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit today (Sunday).
Nine-time reigning champion Smith produced a fine drive in the first of three Easter Sunday races, charging through the field to hunt down the frontrunning duo of Tom O’Rourke and Martin Gibson. O’Rourke passed long-time race leader Gibson late on, but Smith was just behind them as the race entered its final lap.
Smith’s Daimler Freightliner slid past Gibson into Graham Hill Bend before he set up a decisive winning move at Clearways before taking the chequered flag. O’Rourke and Gibson duly claimed the remaining podium places with Neil Yates, John Bowler and Stuart Oliver rounding out the top-six.
A return to the top step of the podium followed in the second race of the day – the fourth this weekend – with Smith once again working his way into a winning position. This time, the race was shortened following an incident involving Graham Poole at Paddock Hill Bend. John Bowler and Michael Oliver each took a step on the rostrum this time around with Stuart Oliver, O’Rourke and David Jenkins claiming the remaining spots in the top-six.
The final race of the weekend proved to be something of a classic, with Smith once again taking a starring role. At the front it was his namesake David Smith who lead initially from pole, before Stuart and Michael Oliver moved into a position to seize a father-son one-two.
Behind them however, the battle for the last spot on the podium was fierce with David Smith holding off Ryan Smith for lap after lap. Following a series of hard defensive moves, Ryan Smith eventually forced an opening at Druids to seal a full day’s worth of podium visits. Jenkins was another to pass David Smith late on, claiming fourth whilst the latter took fifth.
