Colin Turkington claimed his fourth Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship pole position of the season in Quick Six Qualifying at Brands Hatch this afternoon, whilst Tom Ingram outqualified his main title rivals with a fine drive to second.
Team BMW’s Turkington was in sublime form throughout the knockout Qualifying process and duly delivered a best time of 1m29.333s to claim his place at the front of the grid. The Northern Irishman secured this year’s Goodyear Wingfoot Award in the process, taking home a trophy to celebrate his status as this year’s strongest qualifier.
Behind Turkington, it was Ingram who fared best in the battle of the main title rivals, charging hard to claim second, just 0.036s behind Turkington. The Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS ace pressed on through the final six-driver shootout in an attempt to steal pole and the resulting bonus point, but fell just short. As a result he heads into Sunday’s first race second in the standings, albeit level on points, but with a positional advantage over his rivals.
Ash Sutton was third after having his initial time deleted for exceeding track limits. The NAPA Racing UK Ford was able to recover from that, however, ultimately setting time good enough to secure a place just behind Ingram. Sutton will be joined on the second row of the grid by Josh Cook, who showed well in his Toyota.
Aron Taylor-Smith was the wildcard heading into the final part of qualifying, entering the session as the only one of six drivers not in mathematical contention for the title. The Irishman showed his class though, lapping just shy of half a second behind Turkington’s pace to take fifth.
Championship leader Jake Hill could only manage sixth quickest in the final qualifying session of the year. The Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport BMW progressed relatively comfortably through the earlier parts of the grid setting process before being forced to settle for sixth.
