RML Group celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024 and the respected motorsport and engineering organisation will recognise this with a special display when Super Touring Power 2 arrives at Brands Hatch on 29/30 June. Founded by Ray Mallock in 1984, RML is well known by many for its association with touring car racing, most notably in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and later the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).
RML was a near constant presence on the BTCC grid during the fondly remembered Super Touring years of the ‘90s which will once again take centre stage at the Brands Hatch summer tin top showpiece. RML ran Vauxhall machinery in the early part of the Super Touring era, firstly under the Ecurie Ecosse banner before taking on the full works operation from 1994.
RML claimed the BTCC title in 1995, with its Vauxhall Cavalier topping the table in John Cleland’s hands, whilst James Thompson, Jeff Allam and Michael Briggs contributed towards the Manufacturers crown in the second car. RML then began what was to be a fruitful relationship with Nissan in 1997. This culminated in a title win with Laurent Aiello in 1999 towards the close of the Super Touring period.
During the 21st century, RML ran the official works effort in the BTCC for Seat before bringing Chevrolet to the domestic championship alongside its successful WTCC campaigns with the American manufacturer. It was during this period that RML dominated on the world stage with Yvan Muller and Rob Huff claiming world titles as part of a super team which also included touring car icon Alain Menu.
Beyond touring cars RML has successfully campaigned cars across a range of disciplines, including sports cars, rallying and stock car racing.
The RML celebrations at Brands Hatch will centre around a team transporter and a selection of special items from the outfit’s past. This will include trophies, race suits and display engines. Current RML Group CEO Michael Mallock will be attending the event alongside his father and business founder Ray Mallock.
The display will also feature a special appearance from an RML WTCC championship winning Chevrolet Cruze, as raced by Muller, Huff and Menu. The global tin top conqueror will be accompanied by an eclectic selection of machinery designed by the company including a selection of Ray Mallock’s own race cars, the Nissan Juke-R and the Nissan ZEOD. Other special cars from RML’s past will be announced in due course.
Michael Mallock, CEO of RML Group, said: “RML Group is immensely proud of its Touring Car heritage, from our early days of preparing the Vauxhall Cavalier to winning multiple BTCC and WTCC championships with Nissan and Chevrolet – RML Group has a history of total quality engineering and delivery. In our 40th year, we continue these winning traditions with our high-performance battery systems and advanced engineering services. We are delighted to be attending the Super Touring Power 2 race weekend to celebrate the last 40 years of success and to celebrate our next 40+ years of excellence.”
